Mondays & Rainy Days Past

The following is a blog I wrote last August and then didn't post. I think I decided the picture wasn't good enough. I've since decided I love this memory too much to care about how the photo looks.

~~~
Rainy days don't typically get me down and Mondays are just a new start. The Carpenter's singing the song however leaves me ready to leap.
Yesterday was a rainy day. The rain clouds slowly crept from the west as Max and I finished some errands. The thunder started and accompanied us to Trader Joe's. We made it home only slightly wet and shortly thereafter, it began to pour.
Jake, a perpetual four-year-old, excitedly prattled on about playing in the rain. Henry was the only one up for it. I grabbed the camera.
They followed each other up the sidewalk and around and around the driveway. With bare, white feet contrasting with summer brown legs, they shuffled through the biggest of puddles. It was fun to watch.
Playing in the summer rain is a fond memory of childhood for me. Cool respite from the summer heat. The solitude of feeling like the only one in the world.
I wish now I could remember why I didn't join them. Next time I'll be cool and feeling like the only one in the world, except for Jake and Henry.
The Trials of Summer
I suppose if I wanted to be ornery, I could say this post was meant to be an addition to the "through the screen door" series -- BUT I COULDN'T GET TO THE SCREEN DOOR!
Care to guess how many people are in the yellow house right now?
Yeah, I don't know either.
They're Baaaackkkk....
Last week when the horrible heat broke for about 10 minutes. The kids came out.
It didn't last long because of the choking humidity.  Still it was nice to see the sleepy neighborhood wake up - if only for a while.
The Best of Friends....Still
Through the screen door I saw Ella and Macy engrossed in a quiet conversation at the end of the sidewalk. I am not sure if they were telling secrets but I like to think they were.
These girls have been friends since they were three. As they've moved through school, made new friends and pursued new interests they've always remained friends.
The Brownies had it right when they instructed, make new friends but keep the old.
This friendship is definitely gold.
The Ultimate Taco Project - Holy Horchata!
It's hard to believe The Ultimate Burger Project of 2009 began almost 2 years ago. The project was based upon building the best burger from scratch - bun, condiments and freshly ground beef. I had really hoped for a follow up project last year but nothing inspired me and then last winter it came to me - tacos. We love Mexican food and experiment with a lot of different types so this is the perfect topic.
My project began months back with hand made corn tortillas. Successful, delicious and pretty straight forward, the perfect place to start. Shortly thereafter, I pursued horchata. Again thinking it would be easy, too I found that it took a bit of research to find the horchata of my dreams.
Many years ago, I was taken to a Mexican joint in the city, off Division if memory serves. I was too young to really appreciate how great the food probably was, but what I do remember was the horchata. It was dipped out of a big rectangular cooler with a cup and poured into the cup I would eventually drink from - gross. It sort of skeeved me out but then I tasted it - I couldn't be rude - it was wonderful. Sweet with a slight cinnamon essence and the perfect cooling refreshment with spicy food. This horchata has been the earmark for all other.
The recipe calls for rice flour or ground raw rice. After a few seconds of grinding in the VitaMix - rice flour. Technically, I wouldn't call what I made flour, it was a bit more coarse than that. After my first experimentation though, I found too finely ground, it wound up as gritty sediment in the glass. Some texture is good, too gritty is icky.
Other ingredients, include milk, sugar, cinnamon sticks and vanilla extract.
I think what gives this rice milk great flavor and body is the cow's milk reduced over low heat by half. Since I tend to be a bit neurotic. I like to mark a skewer before adding the flame so I can see when it's reduced enough by checking the skewer. Clever or crazy?
Water, reduced milk and cinnamon sticks are brought to a boil and allow to set while the cinnamon infuses the mix. Add in the sugar, rice flour and vanilla to the mix and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
It's delicious and just what I was searching for - what are the chances the second recipe would hit the mark? I like to think it comes from many years of recipe reading.
The last time I served horchata one recipe was gone within the hour.
This time I doubled the batch. They all asked why I made so much.
Maybe I should sell some from a cooler....
Horchata
Mary Sue Milliken & Susan Feniger (remember the Two Hot Tamales?)
1 quart non-fat milk
2 quarts water
4 cinnamon sticks
1/4 cup rice flour or 1/3 cup raw white rice crushed to a powder in a blender
3/4 cup sugar
1 T. vanilla extract
Pour the milk into a wide skillet and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook, stirring frequently, until reduced by half. Strain into a large saucepan and add the water and cinnamon sticks.
Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer and cook 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let sit 15 minutes. Remove the cinnamon sticks and reserve.
Combine the rice flour, sugar, and vanilla in a bowl. Pour the milk mixture and whisk to incorporate well. Refrigerate at least 4 hours. Then pour the liquid into a pitcher, discarding the sediment that has settled on the bottom of the bowl. Serve cold over ice with cinnamon sticks at stirrers.
The Blizzard of 20-11
I am so excited. There's a blizzard. School is already canceled. Doug is closing the plant.
Maple syrup candy, snow ice cream, breakfast sausage making. Valentine crafting, movies and playing in the snow. We'll have pot roast and meatloaf and cinnamon rolls, too.
How many days does a snow day last?
The Ultimate Taco Project - Corn Tortillas
We in the yellow house really like Mexican food. Doug makes great fish tacos exceptional tamales and really good guacamole. When it comes to cooking Mexican food, I like to leave it to Doug. It's one of those meals I don't cook. I am, however, very good at cutting limes, opening Coronas and making Chillatas.
Summer of 2009 we worked all season on The Ultimate Burger Project. (Check out the first post here.) Summer 2010 was a blur and there were no projects that really called to me. And then I decided the Ultimate Taco Project needed to be addressed. While as stated above, much of the work will be in Doug's hands there are a few things I'll be bringing to the table.
Case and point...
Corn tortillas!
We had talked for a looong time about making our own and then talked a loooong time about purchasing a tortilla press. This required a trip to Sur La Table (gasp!) and recently, I finally got around to it. Side note: W-S now carries a press, same price, online only. Just sayin'.
They couldn't be easier. The toughest part is getting to a Sur La Table. (gasp!) Anyway, masa harina, salt and water. Masa harina, is "the Spanish word for "dough", masa is the traditional dough used to make corn tortillas. It's made with sun-or fired dried corn kernels that have been cooked in lime water( water mixed with calcium oxide). After having been cooked and soaked in lime water overnight, the wet corn is ground masa. Masa harina literally "dough flour", is flour made from dried masa." Gosh, I love The Food Lover's Companion! I need to be thorough, after all, my involvement in this project is limited.
I won't include a recipe since most are very similar and you'll find one on the back of the flour bag. I will share a few tips I've picked up through reading and experience, albeit limited.
When making the dough add water judiciously. It should stick together like Play-Doh but not be too sticky.
If you find it's too dry as you break it into pieces, wet your hands to add a bit more water to the dough and prevent it from sticking. Keep the portions covered with a damp flour sack towel to prevent the dough from drying out. Smash dough slightly before placing it into the press. For a 4" tortilla you need about an ounce of dough. Larger tortillas obviously require a bit more, maybe 1 1/2 to 2 ounces.
Place the dough ball onto the tortilla press that's been lined with a plastic bag. Use a ziploc bag rather than plastic wrap, it's easier to manage. I cut the bag so it opened like a book, placed the bag in the press with the "binding side" to the back of the press. When I was done, I left the bag, wiped of crumbs in the press to use again the next time.
As you press them, pop them into a super hot cast iron pan. Take a few minutes to tap them gently with your finger tips between flips to create air pockets for a light tortilla. As they finish, place them on a flour sack towel to cool but stay moist. You can use them right away or wrap them in plastic wrap to prevent them from drying out in the fridge.
Ready to fill.
Before we ate them with some fast pork tacos, we tossed them onto the gas burner to warm and brown them up a bit. They were delicious and far superior to anything I've ever bought.
Next up? Flour tortillas.
Horchata, too. You've gotta drink horchata with a spicy taco.
Check back soon.
2....1....and Now It's The Year!
Two, then one day before Christmas.....
We had an especially lovely dinner with dear friends. Thank you for a really fun evening!
In her spare time, my dearest friend Holly baked all of these wonderful cookies. SHE can make spritz and those tasty Norwegian twists. Her chicken coop kicks butt, too.
Are you a fan of Holmes of Homes on HGTV? Not me, I am a fan of Henry on Homes. If you need any handy work done, call. Don't Grandmas think of the best gifts?
Oh my! A trifle! Don't you wish you had this recipe?
Through the screen door, a Christmas Eve delivery to Margaret.
A houseful of family and lots of good food.
The annual scratching of the lottery cards. Thank you Uncle Jono! We actually won some this year.
A very tired Christmas puppy.
It was a Glee-ful Christmas in the yellow house. They are GLEEKS. Notice the backward "L's"? Irony?
I know they are mine but could they BE any cuter?
I busted out the favorite cookies, cocoa crinkles. Perfect with a cup of Jake's fancy cocoa. I always hide some of these lest there be none for Christmas.
And now the new year is upon us. All good things are ahead. We are healthy and happy and together.
We are so blessed.
That Boy In The Backyard
Junie B. has a boyfriend.
His parents call him Lefty. We call him that boy in the backyard.
They are in love. The cute kind of love, like when the neighbor boy kisses the girl at the first grade Christmas party.
To avoid the love that comes later, Junie paid a visit to Dr. Jennie.
The down side of this, for all of us, is while convalescing, June has had to miss her standing 3:45pm play date with the boy in the back yard. Henry calls it tea time.
Everyday when the kids walk in the door from school, she begins running from window to window looking for that boy. So sad - young love.
This final straw, this view through the screen door.
So forlorn. He loves her. And so....
...at four o'clock, they had tea.
I am pretty sure she'll hold her own in this relationship.
She's faster than he is.
That's my girl.
Halloween 2010
Coerce final costumes decisions from children. Determine how to execute costumes. Trip to Wal-mart in search of white sweatshirt. Buy candy. Find fancy scarf from working days and a classic vest. Surf the web for Young Luke Skywalker desert boot inspiration. Late night trip for borrowed costume gear. Emergency costume related phone call. Attend Grammy's Annual Halloween Party. Buy more candy. Gather costumes for third and final wearing. Hunt for last year's clearance Halloween paper goods. Carve pumpkins. Search frantically for votives to provide pumpkins with a haunting glow. A trip for extra buns and.....more candy. Light various candles of various sizes and fragrances.
And then...they were gone.
Where does the time go? It seems only recently I turned Jake into a pony, Max into a devil (for the 3rd time), Ella into a tiny angel and Hen's costume was a tattoo on my enormous stomach. This year June was the only one left behind and the only one that I snapped a semi-formal picture of in costume. She was a lovely Ballerina Fairy, wasn't she?
You sort of feel sorry for her don't you?
Call me crazy.
I am just not quite ready to let it all go.
Time For Bed
A twist on through the screen door....
The girls have become very good at putting themselves to bed - with the exception of Little Lily.
She perches on the family room picture window to tell us it's time.
She likes to be tucked in.
What Happened?
The view through the screen door a few Fridays ago...
Where is the sidewalk chalk?
Where are the bubbles?
Is he in the - street?
Hey, wait - are there girls out there?
Skateboards?
Doting little brothers?
Where are the tricycles?
Why did he bring a movie instead of Tonka Trucks?
My how time flies....
Besties - Old School
Yesterday in Chicagoland we were blessed with ridiculous weather. I think it topped out somewhere about 80 degrees. Unheard of in April since sometime in the '40s. A fabulous day to be sure but the best part was that April 1st looked like summer. The kids are on spring break so they were able to fully enjoy the day. Shorts, flip flops, scooters and bicycles - everywhere.
The first look through the screen door, Ella and her best friend Laney. Two girlfriends swinging on the porch enjoying playground games. Love it.
Hurry up summer!
Snow Falls on Prairie
Today the first real snow arrived on Prairie Street. Henry was beside himself last night in anticipation and the older kids were crossing their fingers for a snow day.
This was the view through the screen door or shall I say storm door. (ok, actually from the porch). Henry and Ella at work, Henry no doubt acting as foreman. Jake desperately trying to avoid being nailed by Max's incoming snowball. Needless to say, they were having a wonderful time, even if they were supposed to be shoveling. Who am I to stop their fun?
Here she is, our yellow house, dressed for the holidays and softly dusted with snow. Doesn't she look lovely? We have a perfect roof line for icicle lights and for years have hung them on the upper and lower roofs. Last year, after discovering that brand new lights, from the year before, had died, we decided we were done with lights. The expense is not as much of an issue as is throwing yards and yards of lights into the landfill is. This year we opted for garland with hand-me down lights and wreaths in all the windows. Will the green police come if I admit the garlands are fresh?
At the estate sale of a neighbor lady in our first neighborhood, I was able to purchase an old pair of skates. I've always wanted a pair to have on the porch through winter and was pleased to give these a home. The cute wooden folding chair I found on a curb.
Finally, the snow imps that were supposed to be working, eating the first snowballs of the season. Lights in the landfill, the killing of trees and small children eating snow. I think the green police will be arriving any minute. At least I'll earn points for estate sale-ing and garbage picking, right?
The Best Of Friends
The other day, I looked through the screen door to see Henry and his neighbor friend. They seemed to be taking a break from the landscaping game and were deep in conversation over a chalk drawing.
Our kids have been lucky to grow up in a neighborhood full of kids. Ok, most of them belong to me but there is usually always someone around to ride bikes, make chalk drawings, swing or just hang out on the porch. It's usually easy to gather a group for night games. Individually, there is someone for every age and better still, as a group, they (usually) all get along famously and look out for one another.
Of course, the kids have friends from school and family friends, but there is something unique about a neighbor friend. It's comforting to know that as they move towards middle school and high school, there are still those friends that in some ways, know them best.
Tools of Summer
Many years ago at a yard sale I bought this pair of baskets. I think they are gym locker baskets. Whatever they are, they're perfect for stowing the necessities of summer for front porch living. The contents varies daily but sidewalk chalk, water shooters, bug spray and wiffle balls seem to be staples. When I look through the screen door and see it full to overflowing, I know that summer is in full swing. Unless of course, all the stuff is strewn about the yard but that's another story....
Henry Works
Henry loves to work. One day I noticed him in the midst of a big project. Apparently, all of the child-sized chairs needed to be in the fort. As you can see, it was quite an undertaking and one he took on alone.
In talking with friends, we all seem to wonder how to instill a good work ethic in our children. We wonder if leading by example will really work in the long run. Hopefully, Henry's will to work and desire to accomplish a task will continue and lead him into a successful life. I think it will and I am so proud.
The Lawn Crew
This was the veiw through the screen door yesterday. Henry loves to mow the lawn with his Daddy and very seldom does Doug ever mow alone.
It's never too early to hone the skills of the young to take over the job. The bonus is hanging out with one of your biggest fans!
Happy Father's Day!
